New US EV VW Bus 2027 VW ID.Buzz Back in 2027 with Mattress Trim & ChatGPT

The VW bus is back and this time with a mattress. Volkswagen’s ID. Buzz returns for 2027 after a year off the American market, loaded with new technology, a factory-built camping trim, and one long-overdue fix that drivers had been demanding since the van’s debut.<

There is something almost theatrical about the way Volkswagen has managed the return of the ID. Buzz. The electric minibus — beloved by nostalgia-seekers, coveted by dog owners, photographed at every farmers market it ever rolled through — simply disappeared from United States showrooms after the 2025 model year, skipping 2026 entirely while its German parent sorted out slow sales and a late-arriving previous batch. Now it is back, arriving at dealerships this August, and Volkswagen has made sure the reunion has all the hallmarks of a good comeback story: better tech, a new personality, and the grudging acknowledgment that it probably should have listened to customers sooner.

The most surprising addition to the 2027 lineup is also its most earnest: a dedicated camping trim called the Tourer 4Motion. Adapted from the European “Good Night Package” that VW has offered overseas, the Tourer arrives in America with a fold-out mattress and sleeping platform, window blinds, ventilation panels, and an exterior table and chairs tucked into the package. An Overnight Mode optimizes the vehicle’s climate control and lighting for sleeping, dimming and quieting systems in ways that make the van feel less like a parked car and more like a room. Built on the Pro S 4Motion platform, it also adds Captain’s Chairs, an electrochromic smart roof, a retractable tow hitch, and 20-inch wheels finished in dark graphite.

It is, in other words, Volkswagen’s answer to the vintage Westfalia camper conversions that turned the original Type 2 microbus into a counterculture icon — except this version comes with a ChatGPT voice assistant instead of a hand-cranked pop-top.

Speaking of voice assistants: every 2027 ID. Buzz ships with Volkswagen’s new Android-based infotainment software, called ID.S 6, which represents the most significant interior overhaul the van has seen since launch. The system brings a redesigned navigation interface, access to more than 30,000 radio stations and a million podcasts, YouTube and Spotify streaming, and a gaming platform called AirConsole that turns the infotainment screen into a casual gaming console. Navigation now integrates What3Words, the three-word location system popular with off-grid travelers. Premium services — including advanced navigation with live traffic, the ChatGPT voice assistant, and Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities — are bundled into a single subscription, tidying up what had been a scattered à la carte menu of connected features.

The ADAS story has also been substantially updated. TravelAssist, Volkswagen’s highway driving assistance system, now includes automated lane changes and improved lane centering, along with predictive adaptive cruise control that reads the road ahead more intelligently. Emergency Assist — the system that intervenes if it detects the driver has become unresponsive — can now steer the vehicle to the road’s shoulder or bring it to a complete stop, a meaningful safety upgrade over the previous version’s more limited response. An Area View camera system, new for 2027, gives drivers a stitched overhead perspective of the van’s surroundings, useful for both tight parking and off-pavement maneuvering.

Then there is the change that may matter most to anyone who has actually driven an ID. Buzz for any length of time: one-pedal driving has finally arrived. The original omission was conspicuous from the start. Single-pedal operation — where lifting off the accelerator applies enough regenerative braking to slow the vehicle without touching the brake pedal — is a standard expectation in electric vehicles, used by practically every rival in the segment. That Volkswagen launched the Buzz without it struck many EV buyers as an oversight bordering on negligence. The 2027 model corrects it, and the addition is likely to change the driving character of the van more than any other single update on this list.

Additional new features include myQ Connected Garage, which allows drivers to operate their garage door through the navigation screen, and a North American Charging System adapter bundled as standard equipment, granting ID. Buzz owners full access to Tesla’s Supercharger network without fumbling for a separate dongle. All 2027 models also come exclusively in two-tone paint finishes — a departure from the previous single-color options — with new combinations including a retro-minded Candy White over Cherry Red that reads as a deliberate wink at the original Bus’s most iconic color pairings.

Pricing for the 2027 lineup has not been officially announced, though the 2025 generation spanned from roughly $61,500 to $72,500. Some current dealers are already discounting existing inventory by several thousand dollars to make room for the incoming models, suggesting Volkswagen is paying attention to the price sensitivity that contributed to the van’s sluggish sales in the first place. The company is offering a $7,500 customer cash bonus on remaining 2025 stock, a signal that clearing the lot before August is a genuine priority.

The ID. Buzz has always been a vehicle that people love in concept and struggle with in practice — the range was adequate but not generous, the interior sometimes felt underspecified for the price, the missing one-pedal driving a constant irritant. The 2027 update does not reinvent the van so much as it closes the gaps, adding what should have been there, building in what early adopters had been requesting, and giving the camping community a factory option that once required an expensive aftermarket conversion.

Whether that is enough to significantly lift sales remains to be seen. The American market has not been especially kind to premium electric vans, and the Tourer’s sleeping platform, however charming, will not move the needle for buyers simply looking for a practical family hauler. But for those for whom the ID. Buzz has always been more lifestyle statement than transportation appliance, the 2027 model is the most complete version of that dream Volkswagen has yet offered. The bus is back. It even brought the bed.
