Cars Are Named Family Members and Talked To, Poll Says

For a growing number of Americans, the car parked in the driveway is no longer just a mode of transportation—it’s a member of the family. It may be named “Fancy Jenny,” “The Bug Slayer” or “Baby Sweet Lil’ Kayden,” and it likely plays a role in daily rituals: morning commutes, late-night snack runs, and long drives that spark life’s big conversations.

A new survey confirms what many drivers already feel in their hearts—cars are companions, protectors, and, increasingly, emotional touchstones. As VinFast enters the American electric vehicle market, the Vietnamese automaker is banking on this bond, aiming to design not just a vehicle, but a trusted family member.

According to a survey of 2,000 U.S. car owners conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Meineke, 51% consider their vehicle part of the family. Approximately 53% would keep their current car forever if they could. This strong attachment stems partly from an emotional connection (22%) and fond memories (24%).

Almost as many owners strengthen this bond by giving their four-wheeled companions names. Furthermore, a substantial number of these owners regularly talk to their cars.

More than half say they would keep their current car forever if they could, citing emotional attachment and cherished memories. It’s these deeply personal connections—often solidified after a car “proves itself” in moments of danger or reliability—that informed VinFast’s U.S. strategy. “Our vision,” a spokesperson said, “was to build a car that people don’t just drive, but care for.” With names, conversations, and even guilt over driving something else, Americans’ attachment to their cars is real—and it’s shaping what they want from the next generation of electric vehicles.

VinFast’s VF 8 is designed with that sensibility in mind. Priced from $39,900, the electric SUV offers an impressive suite of features typically reserved for higher-end vehicles: vegan leather upholstery, a 15.6-inch infotainment screen, 11 airbags, and advanced driver-assistance systems. A 10-year or 125,000-mile warranty, along with 0% financing and $269/month lease options, underscores the company’s pitch to families looking to transition to EVs without sacrificing reliability or value. With features like pet mode, camp mode, and personalized driver settings via the VF Connect app, the VF 8 is less a vehicle and more a companion—ready for whatever road lies ahead.
