Rivian rolled out a significant software update, bringing hands-free driving capabilities and a suite of performance improvements to its latest R1 models.
The highlight of the update is Enhanced Highway Assist, a system designed to allow drivers of second-generation R1S and R1T models to take their hands off the wheel for extended periods on select U.S. highways. Positioned as a competitor to Ford’s BlueCruise and Tesla’s Autopilot, the feature aims to ease long highway drives while ensuring drivers remain ready to take control when needed.
Enhanced Highway Assist is currently available at no cost, though it will later become part of a future subscription service under the Rivian Autonomy Platform+.
However, the update is only available on R1 models built from 2024 onward beacause earlier versions lack the necessary hardware to support the new technology. Looking ahead, Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe has suggested that “eyes-off” autonomous driving could arrive next year, though full urban functionality would require additional Lidar sensors.
New Rally Mode for Performance Enthusiasts
In addition to driver-assist technology, Rivian is introducing a Rally mode for customers with dual-motor R1 models equipped with the optional Performance Pack. The mode sharpens throttle response and steering, optimizing performance on a variety of surfaces, including dirt, mud, ice, and asphalt.
Similar to Ford’s Baja mode on the Ranger Raptor, Rally mode enhances off-road capabilities, though Rivian has not specified whether traction control settings are altered.
For owners looking to unlock additional power, the Performance Pack—priced at $5,000—boosts output from 533 horsepower to 665 horsepower on Standard+, Large, or Max Pack models.
Enhancements for All Owners
While some features cater to newer or high-performance models, Rivian has also introduced quality-of-life improvements across its lineup. A new menu option allows owners to configure wheel size, ensuring more accurate range estimations. Side mirrors will now automatically tilt downward when reversing to help prevent curb damage.
Other refinements include an upgraded tire pressure monitoring system and a driver attention alert, which chimes to remind distracted drivers when traffic ahead begins moving.
With this latest update, Rivian continues refining its vehicles, bringing both cutting-edge driver assistance and thoughtful usability enhancements to its growing customer base.
