GM advances connected cars with V2V, hands-free & feet-free driving in 2017 Cadillacs

santamonicfwyGM will begin offering advanced “intelligent and connected” vehicle technologies in 2017 starting with Cadillac and make driving less work for the hands and feet of drivers with Super Cruise (semi-automated driving) and V2V (Vehicle-to-Vehicle) communications.

Super Cruise will offer hands-off the wheel lane following, braking and speed control in certain highway driving conditions. GM semi-automated driving technology will also work in stop-and-go driving. This will make driving in heavy traffic and on long road trips easier.

Connected car scare hacktics at Black Hat

hackinwhitecarCharlie Miller and  Chris Valasek the media darlings of car hacking claim that they will revel a vehicle “intrusion prevention device” at the Black Hat hacking conference in Las Vegas, this week. The two have appeared on CNN and in YouTube videos scaring the general public, by driving around in cars without dashboards in which one the two stops the car without the driver’s permission at very slow speeds.

Connected cars study for interior connected stop signs, no stopping when there’s no traffic

M_stop-signStop signs mean stop, the usual reason for stopping is to look both ways at an intersection to see if anyone else is coming. In areas without a lot of traffic stopping at stop signs burns fuel and wastes time/money.

Researchers at the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute are in the early stages of research in which, instead of putting the road signs on the road,  interactive signs appear inside the car.  If no other car is present at the intersection, the will driver can drive on through.

Connected Car study shows that connected cars like BMW are vulnerable to hacks

Vicente Diaz, Principal Security Researcher at Kaspersky Lab, researched the report about connecting cars to the Internet. However, the auto industry is diligently monitoring threats through its own organizations and most threats require physical access to interior parts of the cars in order to work.

Connected cars with social networks, email, smartphone connectivity, route calculation, in-car apps, can be risky, noted the report.

Find gas stations and pay from your connected car demoed

Drivers get notified when gas is low, are directed to a gas station that accepts wireless payments and then can get promos from the filling station such as discounts on smart water or other favorites of the drivers.  The video claims that personal information will not be stolen.  There is a marketplace for geo-location offers for the driver.

SAP aggregates information on a vehicle’s location, route and fuel level as well as points of interest. VeriFone provides point-of-sale (POS) solutions and Toyota ITC provides telematics data.

Smart Toyota Panasonic home appliance apps to start heat or A/C

ToyotaconenctedapplianceToyota and Panasonic are co-developing a service that links cars with home appliances. A new service will be launched probably by the third quarter.  A feature to expect will allow drivers to set up air conditioning or heat when the car is near the home. It could also turn on the coffee or crock pot on the way home from work.

Big Growth & Big Bucks from Connected Cars in 2018

The growth rate is a 57% Compound Annual Growth Rate from the 45 million connected vehicles in 2013 reports IDATE, noting that driving the connected car ecosystem are profits and safety issues.

Nokia Invests in Connected Cars with HERE Mapping Locatioin Tech
