207 Toyota RAV4 Electrics Get NACS & Woodland is Taller

Toyota Motor North America is making two headline changes to the 2027 RAV4, the sixth-generation small SUV it calls its benchmark in the segment: a revised suspension that lifts the Woodland grade to 9.1 inches of ground clearance, and the addition of a North American Charging Standard (NACS) port to every plug-in hybrid model. Announced from Plano, Texas, on November 5, 2026, the updates arrive on a lineup that is now entirely electrified, offered with a choice of hybrid (HEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains in front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive configurations.

Toyota Gives the RAV4 PHEV Fast-Charging Capability Through NACS

For plug-in buyers, the most consequential change is on the left side of the vehicle. Toyota says all 2027 RAV4 PHEV grades now carry a NACS port with DC fast-charging (Level 3) capability, and the charging port has been relocated to the driver’s side on every PHEV grade. The company positions the move as a way to improve charging convenience and compatibility across North America.

Alternating-current charging also gets an upgrade. The onboard AC charger, which handles Level 1 and Level 2 charging, is now rated at 11 kilowatts on all PHEV grades. The PHEV system itself is Toyota’s sixth-generation design, pairing a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with electric motors and a high-capacity traction battery for 321 total system horsepower and standard electronic on-demand all-wheel drive.

Toyota lists estimated all-electric ranges of 52 miles for the SE, 50 miles for the XSE, 46 miles for the Woodland and 45 miles for the GR SPORT. Fuel economy estimates for the PHEV grades run from 42 mpg city and 39 mpg highway on the SE to 38 city and 35 highway on the Woodland. The company describes the appeal in terms of pure electric driving for daily local trips, with a gasoline engine available for long road trips.

Toyota Raises the RAV4 Woodland Grade to 9.1 Inches of Ground Clearance

The Woodland grade, which Toyota built around outdoor use, receives new springs, shocks and jounce bumpers for 2027. The result is 9.1 inches of ground clearance, compared with 8.1 inches on every other grade except the performance-focused GR SPORT, which Toyota lists at 7.5 inches. The Woodland also gets redesigned all-weather floor and cargo mats.

The grade’s standard equipment list is built around that positioning: electronic on-demand all-wheel drive, all-terrain tires, roof rails with cross bars, a tow hitch receiver, Rigid Industries LED fog lights, 18-inch matte metallic gray alloy wheels and a 120-volt, 1,500-watt AC outlet in the cargo area. Buyers can choose either the hybrid or plug-in hybrid powertrain. The hybrid Woodland is rated at 40 mpg city, 35 highway and 38 combined.

Off-road electronics change across all-wheel-drive models as well. Toyota is giving them Multi-Terrain Select with Rock & Dirt and Mud & Sand modes, replacing the previous Trail mode. The system adjusts engine throttle, brake pressure and traction control to suit the surface. Snow mode, meanwhile, moves to the drive mode select switch alongside Normal, Eco, Sport and Custom.

Toyota’s Hybrid Lineup Keeps Its Efficiency Edge Across Nine Grades

The HEV models continue with Toyota’s fifth-generation hybrid system and a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, producing 222 net combined horsepower on front-wheel-drive models and 229 on all-wheel-drive versions. Manufacturer-estimated fuel economy peaks at 46 mpg city, 40 highway and 43 combined on the front-wheel-drive LE, SE and XLE Premium, and steps down through the range to 43 city, 37 highway and 40 combined on the XSE and Limited.

All models ride on the Toyota New Global Architecture-K platform, with tuning that Toyota says emphasizes body rigidity, suspension components, braking control and steering response. Hybrid models are available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive depending on grade, while PHEV models carry all-wheel drive as standard.

Toyota’s GR SPORT Remains the Performance Grade

At the sporty end of the range, the RAV4 GR SPORT continues as a plug-in hybrid with standard all-wheel drive and chassis tuning developed in partnership with TOYOTA GAZOO Racing. Its GR-tuned suspension and steering are joined by functional aerodynamic elements, including a front lip, a rear wing spoiler and air ducts in the grille and bumper meant to channel air and reduce drag. Wider fender flares add one inch of overall width, and the placement of the drive battery lowers the center of gravity. The grade rides on 20-inch black alloy wheels with performance tires and stands 65.4 inches tall.

Toyota Builds on a Cabin Centered on Digital Displays and Connected Services

Inside, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster is standard on every grade, showing multimedia information along with electric drive meters, charging information and drive mode indicators. A 10.5-inch touchscreen running the Toyota Audio Multimedia system, developed by the Texas-based Toyota Connected team, is standard and supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A 12.9-inch screen and a nine-speaker JBL Premium Audio system are standard on the Limited and available on the XSE.

One of the more notable software changes concerns subscriptions. Toyota is extending the Remote Connect trial from one year to five years on all grades, and the 2027 RAV4 includes five-year trials for Safety Connect and Service Connect as well. Wi-Fi Connect comes with a 30-day, unlimited-data trial. With an active Remote Connect trial or subscription, the XLE Premium, Woodland, XSE and Limited grades are Digital Key capable, allowing a smartphone to replace a physical key. Through the Toyota app, owners can also check charging status, start or stop charging, locate nearby charging stations and manage remote vehicle functions. Toyota notes that its connected services depend on 5G network coverage.

Every grade also receives a backup camera washer for 2027.

Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 Is Standard Across the RAV4 Range

All 2027 RAV4 grades come with Toyota Safety Sense 4.0, which includes the Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Lane Tracing Assist, Road Sign Assist, Automatic High Beams and Proactive Driving Assist. A drive recorder dash cam, Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert and Safe Exit Alert are also standard. The Woodland, XSE and Limited add Traffic Jam Assist, Lane Change Assist and a Panoramic View Monitor. Traffic Jam Assist requires an active Drive Connect trial or subscription.

Toyota Prices the 2027 RAV4 From $32,300 With PHEV Models Arriving in Early 2027

Hybrid models start at a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $32,300 for the LE front-wheel-drive grade, and plug-in hybrids start at $42,100 for the SE, both excluding delivery, processing and handling fees. Toyota expects 2027 RAV4 HEV models to begin arriving at U.S. dealerships later this year, with PHEV models following in early 2027.

Toyota’s warranty package includes a 36-month, 36,000-mile basic warranty, a 60-month, 60,000-mile powertrain warranty, and corrosion perforation coverage for 60 months with no mileage limit. Hybrid-related components are covered for eight years or 100,000 miles, and the hybrid battery for 10 years or 150,000 miles, transferable across owners. The ToyotaCare plan covers initial factory-scheduled maintenance for one year or 10,000 miles, along with two years of roadside assistance.
