After a year spent driving, testing and comparing nearly every new and redesigned vehicle sold in the United States, Kelley Blue Book has named its picks for the 2026 Best Buy Awards, an annual effort to help consumers navigate an increasingly crowded and complex car market.
Now in its 12th year, the awards reflect how quickly the auto industry is changing, with categories that increasingly emphasize electrification, efficiency, safety and value. With hundreds of models competing for buyers’ attention, the editors at Kelley Blue Book said the goal is not simply to crown the most luxurious or powerful vehicles, but to identify those that offer the strongest balance of performance, cost and long-term ownership value.
At the top of the list is the 2026 Nissan Leaf, named Best New Model and Best Electric Vehicle Under $35,000. With more than 300 miles of range, a relatively low starting price and freedom from fuel costs, the Leaf was cited as a sign that electric vehicles are becoming accessible to a far broader audience.
Hyundai emerged as one of the strongest performers overall. The Ioniq 5 was named Best Electric Vehicle, praised for aggressive pricing at a time when average new-car prices are hovering near $50,000. The Hyundai Kona took top honors among subcompact SUVs, while the Palisade won Best Midsize SUV following a redesign that added a hybrid option, upgraded materials and a more rugged trim.
Toyota continued to dominate family-focused categories. The Camry was again recognized as Best Midsize Car, lauded for fuel efficiency, safety and resale value, while the RAV4 earned Best Compact SUV. The Sienna claimed Best Minivan, benefiting from its hybrid-only powertrain and strong reputation for reliability. The Tacoma secured Best Midsize Truck, maintaining its long-standing advantage in resale value.
Ford led the truck and large-vehicle categories, with the Maverick named Best Compact Truck, the F-150 winning Best Full-Size Truck and the Expedition taking Best Full-Size SUV. Editors cited Ford’s ability to blend capability, comfort and efficiency across its lineup.
Among electric family vehicles, the Kia EV9 was selected as Best 3-Row Electric Vehicle, recognized for combining interior space with more than 300 miles of range.
Kelley Blue Book editors emphasized that the awards are designed to reduce the stress of car shopping by distilling a vast field of options into a short list of standouts. In a market shaped by rising prices, rapid electrification and shifting consumer expectations, the 2026 winners reflect a central theme: buyers increasingly want vehicles that are not just advanced, but practical, affordable and built to hold their value over time.
