FCA US LLC announced a sweeping recall of more than 320,000 plug-in hybrid sport utility vehicles sold in the United States, citing a potential fire hazard linked to the high-voltage battery system. The recall includes certain model-year 2020–2025 Jeep Wrangler 4xe and 2022–2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe vehicles — two of the most popular hybrid SUVs in the automaker’s lineup.

The decision follows an internal investigation triggered by a review of customer data that revealed 19 instances of vehicle fires. While the company has not reported any related injuries or accidents, it is urging owners to exercise caution until a permanent fix is in place. Engineers determined that the risk appears to diminish when the battery is fully depleted, and owners have been asked to refrain from recharging their vehicles in the interim.

As a precaution, FCA has also advised affected drivers to park their vehicles outdoors, away from buildings, garages, or other automobiles. “We are taking this issue very seriously,” a company spokesperson said, emphasizing that the company is acting “out of an abundance of caution” while it works to finalize the remedy. The automaker expects a solution soon and will notify customers when repairs can be scheduled at authorized dealerships.

FCA said that owners will receive official recall notices and should carefully follow the included safety instructions. Those with questions are encouraged to contact Jeep customer care at 1-800-853-1403 or visit the company’s recall information portal at recalls.mopar.com.

The recall extends beyond the United States. Approximately 20,753 vehicles in Canada, 2,653 in Mexico, and an additional 32,238 units in other international markets are also affected. Globally, the recall underscores the challenges automakers face as hybrid and electric vehicles become increasingly common — balancing innovation in electrification with the complexities of managing new safety risks.

The Jeep Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe have been among the brand’s flagship electrified offerings, celebrated for combining off-road capability with plug-in hybrid efficiency. FCA’s recall serves as a reminder that as the auto industry accelerates toward electrification, ensuring battery safety and consumer confidence remains an essential — and evolving — part of that journey.
