Polestar 5: Electric GT Performance

The Polestar 5, unveiled at the 2025 IAA Munich auto show, is the production evolution of the eye-catching Precept concept. It takes on a low-slung, fastback silhouette, reminiscent of the now-discontinued Polestar 1 and positioned to rival the Porsche Panamera in size and grand-touring ethos.

Constructed on Polestar’s proprietary Polestar Performance Architecture (PPA)—a bonded aluminum platform—the chassis delivers supercar-level torsional stiffness while keeping weight in check. Advanced heat-cured adhesive replaces welding in its fabrication.

Powertrain & Performance

At launch, the Polestar 5 offers two formidable electric dual-motor powertrains:

  • Dual Motor: ~748 hp, 599 lb-ft torque, 0–60 mph in ~3.8 sec, top speed capped at 155 mph.
  • Performance: ~884 hp, 749 lb-ft, 0–60 mph in ~3.1 sec, same top speed limitation.

Power delivery is handled via a new high-output rear motor paired with a front motor, both using 800-volt architecture capable of ultra-fast charging.

Battery & Range

Equipped with a ~112 kWh battery (usable ~106 kWh), the Polestar 5 supports 350 kW DC fast-charging, replenishing from 10–80% in just 22 minutes.

Range estimates (WLTP) reach ~416 miles for the Dual Motor and ~351 miles for the Performance variant, while U.S. EPA figures will likely be slightly lower yet still impressive.

Some tests using StoreDot’s ultra-fast-charging tech suggest the ability to add up to 100 miles of range in just 5 minutes—though this remains a prototype capability.

Interior & Tech

Polestar remains true to its minimalistic Scandinavian roots inside. It offers:

  • A 14.5-inch portrait touchscreen powered by Android Automotive OS and integrated Google services.
  • A driver-focused 9-inch digital cluster plus optional head-up display.
  • Luxury materials including recycled BComp fibers, optional Bridge of Weir leather, and a 21-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system.
  • A panoramic glass roof and a digital rear-view mirror replacing the conventional rear window to enhance rear headroom.

Driver-assist features include Mobileye-based systems and an extensive sensor array—though notably, no lidar is integrated.

Market Launch & Availability

The Polestar 5 will begin rolling out in select global markets starting in the second half of 2025, with production expected to ramp up through early 2026.

Interestingly, Polestar confirmed it will not launch initially in the U.S., China, Canada, or South Korea, shifting early focus to Europe due to complex tariffs and pricing strategy considerations. Launch pricing begins around €119,900 $168,000) for the Performance trim.

Why the Polestar 5 Matters

The Polestar 5 is a critical “make-or-break” vehicle for Polestar, representing its push into flagship, performance-focused EV territory. It blends supercar-like dynamics, ultra-fast charging, sustainable luxury, and sleek Scandinavian aesthetics.

Already on the radar of enthusiasts and rival brands alike, its specs place it squarely against the Porsche Taycan, Lucid Air, and Tesla Model S Plaid underpinning its ambition.
