Free Tire Inspections from Discount America’s Tire for Tire Safety Week

With one of the nation’s busiest travel weekends fast approaching, Discount Tire, the nation’s largest independent tire and wheel retailer, is offering free tire safety checks at more than 1,200 locations across 39 states as part of National Tire Safety Week, which runs June 30 through July 3.

The annual campaign comes as millions prepare to hit the road for Independence Day. Last year, AAA estimated nearly 71 million Americans traveled over the July 4 holiday — a record high that is expected to hold steady or climb in 2025. With soaring summer temperatures and jammed interstates, tire safety, experts say, should not be overlooked.

“National Tire Safety Week gives us a chance to remind drivers that tires are the only part of your vehicle that touches the road,” said Tom Williams, chief experience officer at Discount Tire. “Proper tire maintenance can mean the difference between a safe journey and a roadside emergency — especially during hot and high-traffic months.”

The initiative, launched in partnership with the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association, reflects growing concern among auto safety advocates that many drivers fail to routinely check their tires — an oversight that can lead to poor handling, reduced fuel efficiency, and even blowouts.

Discount Tire is urging motorists to observe several key tire safety habits:

  • Mind the tread. Drivers can quickly check tread depth by inserting a penny upside down into a tire groove. If Abraham Lincoln’s head is fully visible, the tire needs replacing.
  • Keep pressure in check. Tire pressure should be measured at least monthly — and always when tires are cool. Tire pressure increases roughly 1 psi for every 10-degree rise in temperature, which can cause overinflation during summer.
  • Rotate regularly. To ensure even wear, tires should be rotated every 6,000 miles.
  • Watch the calendar. Tires older than six years may degrade regardless of mileage. Drivers can check the manufacture date on the sidewall’s DOT number.
  • Plan for emergencies. Ensure your trunk contains functional tire repair or inflation kits, especially for vehicles without a spare tire.
  • Choose the right fit. For those in need of new tires, the company offers its proprietary Treadwell tool, which recommends options based on individual driving patterns and conditions.

Appointments for complimentary tire inspections can be made online or in-store at any Discount Tire or America’s Tire location. In conjunction with the safety campaign, the company is offering up to $80 off select tires and wheels from June 28 through July 4.

Founded in 1960, Discount Tire has grown from a single store in Ann Arbor, Mich., to a network of more than 1,200 retail locations nationwide. The company also sells windshield wipers and maintains a robust e-commerce platform.
