Next Nissan LEAF Less Drag & More Brag to Dare/Spare with NACS

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. has launched the first installment of a three-part video series highlighting the creative and technical minds behind one of the world’s most iconic electric vehicles—the completely reimagined Nissan LEAF. As the curtain rises on this third-generation model, it’s not simply about evolution—it’s about honoring a trailblazing past while projecting bold confidence into the electric future.

The story of the Nissan LEAF began in 2010, when the original model broke boundaries and redefined the automotive landscape as the world’s first mass-produced electric vehicle. More than a marketing milestone, the LEAF was a proof-of-concept turned global phenomenon. Now, fifteen years later, it remains a symbol of daring innovation, with close to 700,000 units sold globally and a combined 28 billion kilometers driven by loyal owners around the world.

This latest chapter draws deeply from that rich heritage. Lessons from the LEAF’s first two generations have directly shaped the approach of Nissan’s engineers and designers, giving them the insight and freedom to push the third generation beyond expectations. As Vice President of Global Product Strategy Richard Candler puts it: “We didn’t just want to refine the LEAF. We wanted to recast it as a vehicle that appeals not only to early EV adopters, but to mainstream drivers looking for an alternative to combustion—with no compromises.”

Sculpted to Slice Air, Designed to Delight

The exterior design of the all-new LEAF reflects a focus on intelligent aerodynamics fused with bold visual confidence. Rather than designing a shape and then engineering airflow around it, Nissan took a holistic approach—where form and function were sculpted in harmony from the outset.

The new LEAF’s fastback profile, flush-fitting door handles, active grille shutter, and flat underbody work together to deliver a U.S. and Japan drag coefficient of just 0.26 Cd, with European variants—thanks to distinct wheels and mirror geometry—slipping through air at an even lower 0.25 Cd, based on internal testing. The result is a car that glides not only through cityscapes but also through the resistance of its own form, maximizing efficiency without sacrificing presence.

Functional Beauty: A Roof with Intelligence

A standout feature is the available electrochromic panoramic glass roof, which seamlessly marries aesthetics and energy-conscious design. This tech-forward glass panel uses ion-shifting dimming technology to replace conventional blinds, offering on-demand privacy and heat shielding without adding bulk to the cabin. It also reflects infrared (IR) energy to reduce solar heat gain, improving year-round cabin comfort.

According to Program Design Director Nobutaka Tase, “Even the panoramic roof contributes to aero efficiency. We managed to lower the vehicle’s height at key air detachment points by 12 millimeters without sacrificing interior headroom—a feat only possible with electrochromic glass and the flat EV floor architecture.”

A Cabin That Breathes Space

Inside, the LEAF benefits from the versatility of the CMF-EV platform, shared with Nissan’s latest generation of electric vehicles. The flat floor and clever packaging open up a spacious cabin environment that feels open and modern. Material quality and layout are elevated yet approachable—precisely what families and future-forward drivers are looking for.

Every surface inside the cabin reflects thoughtful ergonomic and visual design. While digital displays dominate the interface, tactile controls remain in areas where intuitiveness and driver connection matter most. The interior doesn’t scream “futuristic,” it speaks softly in a well-crafted dialect of function and refinement.

A Pulse That Still Drives the Brand

At its core, the Nissan LEAF has always been more than just a model; it’s a “heartbeat vehicle”, representing Nissan’s fearless pursuit of innovation. As one of the automaker’s most emotionally resonant nameplates, the LEAF continues to embody the company’s bold mantra: “Do what others don’t dare to do.”
