Subaru Uncharted Compact Crossover Electric SUV 290+ Mi. Range: Double Phone Chargers

Subaru  unveiled its first-ever all-electric compact crossover SUV, the 2026 Subaru Uncharted, in a public debut in New York City. With a name that underscores its venture into new territory, the Uncharted signals a significant evolution in the automaker’s commitment to electrification, blending Subaru’s familiar all-weather capabilities with the promise of cleaner, faster, and more connected driving.

Due to arrive in U.S. showrooms in early 2026, the Uncharted comes equipped with up to 338 horsepower, dual-motor all-wheel drive in most configurations, and a projected maximum range of more than 290 miles in its most efficient trim. It is a five-passenger compact utility vehicle (CUV) built not only to compete with the likes of Hyundai’s Kona Electric and Kia’s Niro EV, but also to expand Subaru’s footprint in the rapidly evolving electric vehicle market.

Sport Meets Utility

The Uncharted will be offered in three trims—Premium FWD, Sport AWD, and GT AWD—each catering to a distinct subset of EV buyers. For drivers focused on range and affordability, the Premium FWD will deliver an estimated 300 miles per charge, powered by a single motor producing 221 horsepower. Meanwhile, the more powerful Sport and GT trims will deliver up to 338 horsepower, enough to propel the vehicle from zero to 60 miles per hour in under five seconds.

These dual-motor versions come standard with Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and the automaker’s X-MODE® terrain management system, which is engineered for enhanced traction on gravel, snow, and dirt. Subaru promises an estimated 290-mile range on the Sport and GT variants—figures that, if realized, would place the Uncharted among the leaders in its class.

Although slightly shorter than Subaru’s current Solterra EV by nearly seven inches, the Uncharted compensates with greater cargo flexibility. Its 25 cubic feet of space behind the second row surpasses expectations for its segment, and its maneuverability is aided by a turning radius comparable to the brand’s beloved Crosstrek.

Underpinning the Uncharted is a high-capacity 74.7-kWh lithium-ion battery pack mounted low within the chassis, contributing to the vehicle’s structural rigidity and low center of gravity. Constructed with lightweight high-strength steel and optimized for aerodynamic efficiency, the Uncharted’s engineering seeks to balance performance with everyday practicality.

Fast Charging and Smart Features

Subaru has paid close attention to the charging experience—an increasingly critical metric for EV shoppers. The Uncharted will use the North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector, granting access to Tesla’s sprawling Supercharger network of more than 15,000 stations across the United States. A high-speed 150-kW charging capability allows the battery to replenish from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes—even in cold weather, thanks to a built-in battery preconditioning system. At home, drivers can take advantage of 11-kW Level 2 charging for overnight top-ups.

Inside, the Uncharted brims with technology and creature comforts. A large 14-inch central touchscreen comes standard across the lineup, supporting wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The front center console features dual wireless smartphone charging pads, while the rear passengers are accommodated with USB-C ports. Heated front seats, heated side mirrors, and a windshield wiper de-icer come standard, as part of the vehicle’s All-Weather Package—hallmarks of the brand’s rugged, all-season identity.

A full suite of Subaru’s EyeSight® driver-assist technologies will be available, including pre-collision braking, front cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, emergency stop assist, and a panoramic view monitor. Higher trims add conveniences like Lane Change Assist, Traffic Jam Assist, and a smart rearview mirror for improved visibility.

The GT trim, the most luxurious of the group, enhances the offering with ventilated front seats, Harman Kardon® premium audio, a panoramic moonroof with motorized shade, and 20-inch alloy wheels. Subaru’s StarTex® water-repellent upholstery—designed for easy cleaning after outdoor adventures—is standard on both the Sport and GT.

A Design That Speaks to Subaru’s Roots and Future

From the outside, the Uncharted conveys both familiarity and forward motion. Subaru’s six-star illuminated logo sits prominently at the front, flanked by the brand’s latest LED lighting signature. The vehicle’s proportions are tight and modern, punctuated by bold body lines and a high beltline that tapers elegantly toward the rear.

A high-contrast, two-tone roof—available on the GT—adds an element of visual flair, while newly designed 18- and 20-inch wheels further distinguish each trim level. Low-profile roof rails come standard on AWD models, maintaining functionality for roof racks, cargo boxes, or outdoor gear.

At the rear, seamless LED tail lamps and dark badging reinforce the sleek and modern look. A silver-painted lower fascia adds a rugged contrast to the otherwise urban aesthetic. Inside, designers opted for a clean and linear dashboard, accented by orange stitching and subtle ambient lighting. Rear legroom is comparable to the Subaru Crosstrek, and heated rear outboard seats are available on the GT for added passenger comfort.

Though Subaru was slower than some rivals to embrace full electrification, the Uncharted marks a notable shift in strategy. The brand’s first attempt at an EV, the Solterra—co-developed with Toyota—was received with cautious optimism. With the Uncharted, Subaru appears ready to chart its own course, bringing its distinctive engineering ethos to bear on a vehicle fully designed with electric-first thinking.

For a company long known for its rally heritage, horizontally opposed boxer engines, and loyal outdoorsy customer base, the move into EVs comes with unique pressures. Subaru aims to preserve the brand values that have built its success while adapting to regulatory and market forces that demand sustainable transportation.

Pricing details for the Uncharted have not yet been released and are expected closer to the vehicle’s early 2026 launch. What is clear, however, is that Subaru intends to stake its claim not just on familiar terrain, but in the uncharted territory of the electric vehicle future.
