Ford Model T Moment to Be Radical Cheap EV Breakthrough on August 11

Ford Motor Company is preparing to announce a sweeping new vision for electric vehicles at a high-profile event in Kentucky on August 11, which chief executive Jim Farley described as the company’s newest “Model T moment.”

The event will introduce Ford’s long-awaited low-cost electric-vehicle platform developed in a secretive “skunkworks” initiative. The flexible design is expected to underpin multiple future models, including a midsize pickup truck arriving in 2027, with smaller crossovers and even ride-hailing vehicles possibly following suit.

Executives have suggested that initial production models may carry a starting price near $25,000, a strategic step to democratize electric mobility and directly challenge low-cost EVs from Chinese automakers like BYD and Geely.

Ford’s electric division has recently suffered financial setbacks, with a Q2 2025 loss of approximately \$1.3 billion, and EV sales of its existing models—the F‑150 Lightning and Mustang Mach‑E—are softening. At the same time, regulatory rollbacks and tariffs under the current administration have added pressure to margins.

Farley said the initiative is meant not just to expand Ford’s product line but to “radically reengineer” its engineering, supply chain, and manufacturing. He noted that daily driving a Chinese-made Xiaomi SU7 brought home the urgency of catching up.

One piece of Ford’s infrastructure—BlueOval Battery Park Michigan—will begin producing lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, known for lower cost and greater stability, in 2026. These cells are expected to power the new EV lineup.

Until now, Ford’s EV portfolio has included only three models. With a mass-market strategy in motion, the company hopes its upcoming platform and product offerings will ignite sales and secure relevance in an increasingly competitive global electric vehicle market.
