USB-C for Connecting and Charging in Automotive

The Emerging USB Type-C connectivity standard, which has seen rapid adoption in the consumer electronics space, is poised to make major inroads in automotive connectivity, Strategy Analytics 2019 USB Type-C Forecast finds.

Strategy Analytics forecasts significant growth of USB-C in cars as consumers demand faster charging

Following rapid adoption in the consumer electronic space, the USB Type-C connectivity standard is seeing rapid adoption in the automotive space, as consumers demand faster charging and more versatility in connectivity options. Availability of USB Type-C began in 2018, and the 2020 model year will see more than a dozen new models offering Type-C connectivity. Between 2017 and 2026, USB Type-C is forecast to have a CAGR of 110 percent, with 2026 unit shipments forecast to be more than 55 million units globally.

“As has often been the case over the last decade, the consumer electronics market is a leading indicator of in-cabin automotive technology trends,” said Edward Sanchez, Senior Analyst, Automotive for Strategy Analytics. “Consumers are increasingly expecting their vehicles to be compatible with their mobile and brought-in devices.”

“We are well past the days of the basic auxiliary jack. Today’s consumers are expecting modern solutions that meet their fast-paced lifestyles. USB Type-C is a powerful and versatile standard that offers a variety of power and data configurations for brought-in devices.” said Richard Robinson, Director, Automotive Infotainment and Telematics, Strategy Analytics.

The report also looks at different silicon suppliers’ solutions and approaches to USB Type-C, including mid-to-high power delivery (PD) applications from 45W to 100W, as well as innovations such as water-resistant connectivity and how USB Type-C will impact other charging standards, including wireless charging.
