Garmin Cyber Attack Hack Damage Almost Over

Garmin Ltd. was the victim of a cyber attack that encrypted some of its systems on July 23, 2020. As a result, many of its online services were interrupted including website functions, customer support, customer facing applications, and company communications.

Wasted Locker – a program that scrambles the target’s data is reportedly the tool used for the attack which holds data for ransom.It was also reported that pilots using FlyGarmin could not download the latest databases needed to fly. There are no reports of problems with Garmin navigation for vehicles.

Garmin Connect and most services are back in operation, there may still be delays.

Garmin immediately began to assess the nature of the attack and started remediation.

They report that they have no indication that any customer data, including payment information from Garmin Pay, was accessed, lost or stolen. Additionally, the functionality of Garmin products was not affected, other than the ability to access online services. Affected systems are being restored.

They expect some delays as the backlog of information is being processed.

Garmin Aviation systems are fully functional. This includes Garmin Pilot Apps, flyGarmin, Connext Services, FltPlan.com.
