Roomier and More Versatile Interior
Based on the model’s upscaled dimensions and EV-derived universal architecture, Hyundai designed a larger interior ‘living space’ to embrace a wider range of customer lifestyles. The driver-centric front row is accentuated by a floating horizontal C-Pad with integrated, dual 12.3-inch panoramic display screens that affirm Kona’s high-tech character.
As part of Kona’s new ergonomic layout, the shift-by-wire gear selector has been relocated from the center console to a stalk behind the steering wheel, allowing more storage in the open console area. The layout emphasizes Kona’s larger, wider interior, providing a versatile and comfortable space for driver and passengers. This impression is further reinforced by the relocation of driver controls around the steering wheel, allowing a multi-use center console storage area with a rotational cupholder design. Ambient interior lighting options are also available that correspond to drive modes, acceleration, or to suit the mood of the driver. The front seats are 30 percent slimmer to maximize rear passenger legroom and the second row Curveless Bench Seat also enhances available space. Even more, a two-stage latching system allows rear seat reclining.
The fully foldable second-row seat and rear compartment provide 25.5 cubic feet of rear cargo volume with rear seatbacks up and 63.7 cubic feet with seatbacks folded down, along with improved loading convenience. Loading anything from luggage to shopping bags is made easier than ever with the available Smart Power Tailgate that enhances cargo space access.

NA Debut Kia 9
Today, Kia unveiled the all-electric 2024 EV9 SUV for the first time in North America at the 2023 New York International Auto Show. As the first three-row EV SUV from Kia, the EV9 is the flagship of the global Plan S strategy, as well as a pioneer in its segment and the automotive industry.
“With the launch of the EV9, we are incorporating our experience in producing brilliantly designed, best-in-class SUVs with our deep expertise in developing the industry’s leading EVs,” said Sean Yoon, president and CEO, Kia North America and Kia America. “The EV9 is a credible, high-value SUV that encapsulates our approach to bringing innovative, consumer-focused products to market with a serious commitment to electrification.”
The EV9 is a beacon that points to the future of an electrified lineup for Kia as a mobility leader. Building on Kia’s reputation of delivering vehicles with segment-above excellence, the EV9 brings the three-row SUV into the EV era with available features that matter most: generous interior volume and cargo space, towing capability, leading vehicle dynamics, rich interior appointments, and fast charging capability. Inside and out, the EV9 exemplifies the Kia design philosophy of “Opposites United,” which masters the creative tension generated by the divergent values of nature and modernity to create a harmonious whole.
Developed on the proven E-GMP architecture dedicated to electric vehicles with fourth-generation battery technology, the EV9 enhances space with seating for up to seven passengers, with a long wheelbase and flat floor that provide both flexibility and comfort for all. Through integration of some of the latest in-vehicle technology, vehicle system over-the-air updates6, ultra-wideband-based Digital Key7, and Onboard Power Generator (V2L) functionality, the EV9 is enabled to continue to evolve throughout the ownership experience. The EV9’s standard 800V electrical architecture enables ultrafast recharging on high-speed DC chargers, designed to go from a 10 to 80 percent state of charge in under 25 minutes4. The EV9 is expected to arrive in the United States in Q4 2023.8
EV9 Exterior Design: A Triumph of Proportion
From first glance, the all-electric EV9 embodies the rugged yet sophisticated typology befitting a flagship SUV. Its muscular stance and dynamic character lines rise with smooth precision to pay homage to the Kia Design north star, the reimagined Kia logo. The EV9 brings to life the Concept EV9, which was guided by visualizing the simplicity of nature’s perfection through the lens of the elements of nature.
At up to 197.4 inches in length, the EV9 is slightly longer than the Telluride SUV and comparable in height (up to 70.1 inches) and width (77.9 inches). With all three rows raised, the EV9 offers 20.2 cubic feet of cargo space. When both rows of rear seats are folded, volume increases to 81.9 cubic feet.
“The exterior styling of the EV9 is a master class in simplicity of form and expression,” said Tom Kearns, chief designer, Kia Design Center America. “With a single unbroken stroke, just like that found on the Kia logo, we were able to define the character of the EV9.”
The boxy, triangular design language of the EV9 emphasizes the tension of its short overhangs and long wheelbase, pushed to the corners over the modular E-GMP electric underpinnings. At the front of the EV9 is the Tiger Face, a reinterpretation of the Kia “Tiger Nose” grille that highlights depth and dimensionality, flanked by slim LED headlights. The available Star Map LED animated Digital Pattern Lighting Grille can be personalized by the driver as part of five Dynamic Welcome Light formations, a first for Kia. Both fasciae exude a confident and recognizable front expression recreated with a futuristic touch. In the rear, slim taillights draw attention to the corners of the EV9’s body. Flush door handles with automatic deployment underscore the clean side profile lines.
Design is in every detail of the EV9, including the available wheel options, which range from 19 to 21 inches. For a more design-driven appearance, the EV9 GT-Line adds model-exclusive styling, raised roof rails9, and 21-inch, exclusive alloy wheels and tires. The EV9 will be available in a choice of gloss or factory matte finish paint options10.
EV9 Interior Design: A Modern Sanctuary
In keeping with the tenets of Kia’s “Opposites United” ethos, the interior of the EV9 infuses cues from nature through creative contrast, innovative use of materials, and the interplay between humans and their environment. This post-industrial approach introduces a new level of refinement of craft to Kia.
“Innovation in materiality is a subtle alchemy that has lasting results, and the EV9 unlocks the next level of our design identity,” said Jochen Paesen, vice president, interior design, Kia Design. “And thanks to clever packaging made possible by E-GMP, the EV9 features a spacious, three-row interior.”
The interior design philosophy of the EV9 introduces the “Ten Must-Have Items,” a new paradigm in Color, Material and Finish (CMF) that will also be applied to future Kia models. In the interior of the EV9, this CMF approach comes to life through the use of non-leather polyurethane seating surfaces, select BTX-free interior trim, and select fabrics and carpets composed of partially recycled materials. From the headliner of the EV9 to a variety of high-touch areas within the cabin, these forward-thinking materials offer a tactile quality to occupants in all three rows, and deliver a well-appointed cabin without the use of animal products.
Reductionism is a motif that envelops the cabin of the EV9. Centrally mounted, hidden-until-lit haptic switches for key infotainment features appear when the EV9 is turned on. The dual-level, floating center console stretches from the first to the second row, offering under-tray stowage to front passengers and cupholders and an available sliding storage console for rear passengers. Hidden in front of the driver is an optional, full-color head-up display. An available Full Display Mirror® replaces the traditional rear-view mirror with a camera view with a flick of the lower tab11. The optional 14-speaker, 708-watt Meridian® Premium Audio adds impressive levels of tonal clarity sand serenity12. Available steering wheel LED lighting illuminates the Kia logo.
Every seat inside the EV9 is considered executive-class, including the second row of seats. First and second passenger row occupants are treated to an available “Relaxation Mode” which offers comfort with power operated leg rests, and second-row creature comforts include 8-way power adjustments enhanced with heating and cooling. High-power USB-C outlets throughout the cabin allow for device recharging for all.
The EV9 will be available from launch in a variety of six- and seven-seat configurations. The EV9’s V2L outlet located in the cargo area can help power tailgating parties, and standard tri-zone HVAC ensures true temperature control in front and back.
EV9 Technology: Connected and Ultramodern
The EV9 features Kia’s next-generation, ultramodern Connected Car Navigation Cockpit (ccNC) operating system. Mirroring the exterior styling, the ccNC display interface takes inspiration from the rising strokes, smooth curves, and high contrast of the Kia logo. The ccNC operating system processes faster and in higher fidelity, with frequently used Quick Controls available with a swipe on the screen. The EV9 will also be the first Kia model to offer vehicle system over-the-air updates, a strategic move towards software-defined vehicles, as well as navigation-based charging guidance using arrival time and distance-to-empty estimates. The EV9 is designed to be a mobile power source, thanks to an Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) and V2L13.
The EV9 will offer standard, advanced ultrawideband-based Digital Key, which allows customers to use their compatible Apple and Samsung smart devices or an NFC-enabled smart card as virtual vehicle keys to lock, unlock, and drive. Furthermore, these keys can be shared with friends and family over text messages on available devices. This latest technology allows the driver to unlock the EV9 without the need to hold a smartphone.
EV9 ADAS: Advancing the Art
The EV9 refines and expands Kia’s roster of standard and available Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Debuting on the EV9 for the Kia brand in North America are Advanced Highway Driving Assist (AHDA)14, and Lane Following Assist 2 (LFA-2)15. Design + Function = Unique Wilderness Style
Like the other Wilderness models, the Crosstrek Wilderness design blends trail-enhanced function with style that also turns heads. To visually communicate the more capable off-road performance, the Crosstrek Wilderness adds exclusive styling with all-new front and rear bumpers, bold hexagonal front grille, larger wheel arch cladding, metal front skid plate, unique hex-design LED fog lights and an anti-glare hood decal in matte-black finish.
Subaru Wilderness badges are emblazoned on the front doors and rear gate. A body-color roof spoiler and black side mirrors with integrated turn signals complement the SUV’s rugged look. Among the exterior colors offered, the Crosstrek Wilderness is available in Geyser Blue, which is exclusive to the Wilderness family.
The Crosstrek Wilderness features a versatile ladder-type roof rack system, with a 176 lb. dynamic load capacity and a 700-lb. static load limit, allowing safe use of larger roof-top tents. The roof rail design provides flexibility to fit a wide variety of carrying accessories, including Genuine Subaru Accessories available from Subaru retailers.
Off-Road Capability
Exclusive suspension components give the 2024 Crosstrek Wilderness 9.3-inch ground clearance, more than a half-inch increase over the other Crosstrek models, which already were among the highest in their segment. Longer coil springs and shock absorbers provide the added ground clearance, while special tuning helps maintain dynamic performance.
Longer travel strokes for the front and rear shock absorbers help keep the tires in contact with rough surfaces, increasing vehicle stability. In addition, a longer dampening compression stroke helps increase absorption on rough road surfaces, providing a smoother ride. Even with its added ground clearance, the Crosstrek Wilderness maintains a low step-in height for ease of entry.
The approach angle is increased from 18.0 degrees in other Crosstrek models to 20.0 degrees on the Wilderness; the angle of departure increases from 30.1 to 33.0 degrees, and ramp breakover angle moves up from 19.7 to 21.1 degrees.
The Crosstrek Wilderness comes equipped with Yokohama GEOLANDAR® all-terrain tires for optimal performance in mud, gravel or snow. Mounted on exclusive 17-inch alloy wheels in matte-black finish, the tires are embossed with raised white letters.
X-MODE for Maximum Control
The Crosstrek Wilderness is equipped with Subaru’s driver-selectable dual-function X-MODE. The system offers Snow / Dirt and Deep Snow / Mud modes. To help maximize traction in varying conditions, each mode specifically optimizes the engine output and CVT ratio positions, increases the Active All-Wheel Drive engagement and enhances the control logic of the Vehicle Dynamics Control with Traction Control System. The X-MODE display features a Roll-Angle Indicator to help the driver judge potentially hazardous situations.
This technology also helps make Crosstrek Wilderness a nimble climber. When the X-MODE system is activated, Low Speed / Low Ratio Gradient Control is automatically put on standby to sense when the vehicle is traveling on a steep incline at low speed. When it does, the system shifts the CVT to its lowest ratio (4.066:1). Combined with the Wilderness model’s lower differential ratios, the system also enhances rough off-pavement, low-speed drivability over rocks and other situations that require repeated on/off accelerator usage.
Standard Hill Descent Control will automatically engage individual wheel braking control on downgrades when the vehicle is driven under 12 mph with the accelerator pedal pressed less than about 10 percent, thereby helping to control vehicle speed. Active Torque Vectoring, standard on all 2024 Crosstrek models, enhances handling stability on road or trail.
An Interior designed for the Outdoors
Inside, Subaru equipped the Crosstrek Wilderness cabin for comfort and durability. The seats are upholstered in comfortable, water-resistant Subaru StarTex® material that features the Subaru Wilderness logo embossed in the front headrests. Bold copper colored contrast stitching accents the interior, complementing the anodized copper-finish accents on the shifter, gauge meter rings and leather-wrapped steering wheel. Upon entering the vehicle, the driver is greeted with a Wilderness logo appearing in the meter display at start-up.
Black pillar trim, assist grips, overhead console, and headliner pairs well with the Gunmetal Grey trim used on the dash, doors, and shifter plate. Standard all-weather floor mats feature a unique Wilderness design. In the cargo area, a removable water-resistant rear cargo tray protects the load floor from wet, muddy gear tossed in the back. The rear gate comes equipped with an LED light for better nighttime visibility.
The Wilderness comes standard with the SUBARU STARLINK 11.6-inch Multimedia Plus system. The 11.6-inch high-resolution touchscreen is equipped with wireless Apple CarPlay® and wireless Android Auto™ with full screen display. Additional features include Bluetooth® hands-free phone and audio streaming connectivity; AM/FM stereo; rear vision camera; SiriusXM® All-Access Radio and SiriusXM Travel Link® (4-month free Platinum Plan); HD Radio®; and over-the-air updates.
The multimedia system also works as a center information display with combination meter integration and on-screen controls for audio, climate, and vehicle functions. The Wilderness is also equipped with a wireless phone charger in the center console.
Competitively Priced Adventure Compact SUV
Starting at $31,995, the Crosstrek Wilderness comes with an extensive list of standard features including Keyless Access with Push-Button Start; steering responsive LED headlights; SI-Drive engine performance management system; and Tire Pressure Monitoring System with individual tire display and automatic individual wheel ID registration. The SUV is also equipped with USB-A and USB-C ports in the front and rear of the center console; dual zone automatic climate control; and the All-Weather Package with heated front seats, windshield and exterior mirrors.

Virtual Lexuses at NYIAS
It’s not hard to imagine your picture-perfect 2023 Lexus RX or 2023 Lexus RZ 450e luxury utility vehicle. But, it’s even better to envision it on your own terms – especially amid the hustle and bustle of the New York International Auto Show (NYIAS).
Through the power of artificial intelligence, guests attending NYIAS at the Jacob Javits Center from April 7-16 are able to type in a prompt for the Lexus RX or RZ, placing either vehicle in a setting limited only by their imagination, and manifest that vision into existence.
“Lexus is focused on creating innovative ways to connect with our guests, and this time, we’re using Generative AI technology at the New York International Auto Show to engage with them in a unique and very personalized way,” said Vinay Shahani, vice president of Lexus Marketing. “As we’ve shown with the recent launches of the all-new Lexus RX and RZ, intuitive technology is a key pillar of the brand, and this experience featuring these two vehicles provides guests the opportunity to explore what it would look like to have the RX and RZ as a part of their everyday lives and their dreams.”
At the Lexus display, guests are guided through prompts that generate images that appear on a 98-inch screen, featuring either the Lexus RX or RZ. Afterward, guests can send themselves their images via email, allowing them to bring their art home with them with nearly any backdrop they could fathom – even in a galaxy far, far away.
To develop the AI art tool, Lexus collaborated with data scientists and machine learning engineers at Toyota Connected North America (TCNA), a data, cloud, artificial intelligence, machine learning and software center of excellence headquartered in Plano, Texas. TCNA leveraged state-of-the-art Generative AI models such as Stable Diffusion and ControlNet architectures to train a proprietary Generative AI model to generate photorealistic or artistic style images – all by way of text input. The model was trained on more than 500 photos of each vehicle, capturing every detail imaginable.
Additionally, the stable diffusion model was trained on LAION-5B dataset from non-profit organization LAION to use for backgrounds, artistic styles and detailing.
“At TCNA, we are always looking at new ways to leverage data, artificial intelligence, machine learning and other cutting-edge technologies to deliver value to our customers and engage with them,” said Shravanthi Denthumdas, vice president of Engineering, Mobility & Emerging Technologies, TCNA. “Generative AI is such a new field for most of the companies, and we’re enthusiastic for our partnership with the Lexus marketing team and utilize this technology to develop strong bonds with guests.”
This next-level engagement follows up on last year’s successful launch of Lexus Performance Driving School’s first non-fungible token (NFT), which provided guests who completed the program a digital keepsake. Embedded with performance data and hero images, more than 60 guests minted their NFTs to their cryptocurrency wallets, where they can keep them in perpetuity or use them to potentially unlock future experiences with the Lexus brand.

VW Atlas Peak Edition Goes to New Heights in NY
Volkswagen of America, Inc. is pleased to introduce the 2024 Atlas Peak Edition trimline at the New York International Auto Show. Inspired by the Basecamp Concept shown in 2019, body cladding elements create a more rugged overland look, while black-out detailing and a unique interior palette further elevate the model year 2024 Atlas family.
The face of Peak Edition models immediately stands out from other Atlas trims with a rugged front fascia and underbody cladding in silver. A gloss-black “X” design element stretches across the lower fascia, borrowed from Atlas Cross Sport. Two chrome strips pop on an otherwise blacked-out grille, flowing to either side of the illuminated logo.
Moving around the side of the vehicle, a large gloss-black badge adorns the front quarter panel with the Peak Edition logo in orange and chrome. Eighteen-inch black alloy wheels equipped with 255/60 all-terrain tires bolster the versatility of the Atlas, while rugged side sills in black and silver visually reinforce the look. Black mirror caps, window surround, wheelarches, and roof rails complete the black-out look in profile.
At the rear, a black tailgate strip meets a rugged black and silver diffuser with chrome exhaust bezels. New exterior colors for the Atlas family, and exclusive to Peak Edition models, are Avocado Green and Pure Grey.
Inside, Peak Edition models feature a signature look that pulls from the logo colors. Titan Black leatherette is paired with light grey accents and orange contrast stitching. Dash and door inserts in a black metallic check pattern further set the look apart from the rest of the Atlas family. A steering wheel clip bears the same logo as the exterior badging and ambient lighting with 30 color choices pairs with innovative backlit dash décor reading “Peak Edition.”
The Peak Edition trimline joins the 2024 Atlas lineup, which will be detailed in full closer to launch this summer.
