BlackBerry & Jaguar Land Rover
BlackBerry and Jaguar Land Rover announced toat the companies have entered into a multi-year agreement to collaborate and develop technology for the automotive manufacturer’s next-generation vehicles.
As part of the agreement, BlackBerry will license its QNX and Certicom technology to Jaguar Land Rover, as well as assign a team of engineers to support in the development of new Electronic Control Unit (ECU) modules. The first ECU project will be a next-generation infotainment system.

GuardKnox Lockdowns Patents
GuardKnox Cyber Technologies a comprehensive cybersecurity company providing hardware and software solutions to the automotive value chain, announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has issued US Patent 9,899,563B2 to the company for its Lockdown Methodology.
GuardKnox has also received a notice of allowance from the US Patent Office on its second patent covering the hardware architecture it has developed.
The Lockdown Methodology is a proactive defense that prevents any attacks to enter the entire vehicle’s ecosystem. It protects by scanning a vehicle’s communications matrix and configures it in such a way that any instructions have to meet in real time a set of rules, standards and state machine enforcement. If these requirements are not met, the instruction is classed as invalid and not permitted into the vehicle’s systems.
GuardKnox’s second patent will be for hardware components configured for secure physical separation of communications networks. The company also has several additional patents surrounding cybersecurity technologies, as well as many having to do with subscription-based services being reviewed by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
GuardKnox’s cybersecurity solution can be installed during the design and production of a new vehicle, can be fitted into current production models, or retrofit into vehicles now on the road. By design, it is completely transparent to all other ECUs and does not require any architectural modification, significantly lowering integration costs.
According to Dionis Teshler, GuardKnox Cyber Technologies Chief Technical Officer, “When most people think of cybersecurity in the automotive industry, they think of someone taking control of the vehicle and crashing it. However, we also need to consider another aspect, your car collects a growing amount of data, either from its internal systems or an outside source such as a personal cellphone connected to the system. This data is very valuable and worth a lot of money, making it a target for hackers. Our solution will not allow the car to be hacked nor data to be stolen.”
While GuardKnox is currently focused on securing connected and autonomous automobiles, the patent covers all moving vehicles including trucks and buses to ships, planes, drones, and even spaceships. With the issuance of this new patent, GuardKnox is actively seeking potential commercialization partners for its Lockdown Methodology products in the United States.
